Queer Union has chosen to adopt the excerpt from Danez Smith’s “Summer, Somewhere” because Queer Union very much exists as a place intended to be a home for queer students at NYU, especially those who are seeking to improve their university so that it, too, can feel more like home. Many of Queer Union’s members love this institution, but often feel like this institution does not love them back. Students, especially those of marginalized identities, need more support. Support, perhaps more than anything else, is one of the best indicators of love.
By adopting this poem, Queer Union wants students to know that we as an organization will love them back.
